Small steps to help a hard conversation go a little better.

Pause first

Take a breath and wait until everyone is ready to talk. It is okay to come back to a conversation after a break.

Hear each side

Give each person time to explain what happened and how they felt. Try, “What do you wish I understood?”

Make a plan

Ask, “What could we try next time?” Choose one small, realistic step that everyone understands.
